After more than two decades on the air, PBS Kids has cancelled Caillou — and many parents couldn’t be happier.

PBS Kids made the announcement on Twitter alongside advice on how to help children cope with the devastating news, but many parents rejoiced that Caillou would no longer be teaching their kids bad manners. “Caillou getting cancelled is the start to 2021 I needed,” wrote one Twitter user. “That bald headed little terror can no longer brainwash kids into being worse. #goodriddance.”

For years, parents have been complaining in petitions, YouTube videos and Facebook groups that the four-year-old boy is not precocious, but whiny and mean. Social media erupted with people sharing examples of Caillou’s bad behaviour and hailing his demise as a sign that 2021 will be much better than 2020.

The first season of the show, which was produced in Canada and inspired by a Quebec children’s book series, was originally broadcast in French in 1997. Caillou premiered on PBS on Sept. 4, 2000 and ran for five seasons before being syndicated.

It has attracted a stunning level of animosity for a series about the relatively uncontroversial daily life of a four-year-old boy, Tristin Hopper wrote in 2017.
