An Eagle has landed.

In the COVID era where it can be quite difficult for a student coming out of high school to make a case for a college spot due to a lack of audition time with no games played this season during a series of pandemic pauses, Sherwood Park’s Mikah Reed was fortunate to have already had a robust resume at her disposal.

MacEwan Griffins had Eagle eyes set on SCA’s Reed Back to video

The standout Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles basketball player has landed a college commitment to join the MacEwan University Griffins next season.

Reed was a Metro Edmonton Athletics all-star during the 2019-20 campaign after leading the SCA Eagles to the 3A zone championship final.

The Strathcona standout was clutch in the zones, which saw the Eagles come away with a narrow 75-73 win over Sturgeon in the semifinals before they were downed by a similarly close 66-52 result in the final by St. Peter the Apostle right before the coronavirus school sports shutdown which saw the provincial canceled anyway.

“(Strathcona Christian) was led by a pretty strong charge on her end,” MacEwan women’s basketball head coach Katherine Adams said in a school release. “She’s just a gamer. In those important moments, she steps up.”

A shooting guard, Reed has been described as creative and clutch, leading Adams to believe that the Park product has the potential to make an impact for the Griffins in Canada West competition.

“If you only get a snapshot of her play, you’d describe her as a shooter,” Adams detailed in the release. “What I also really like about her game is she’s a playmaker. She’s a great teammate who looks to get her teammates involved and share the ball. When it comes down to it, she’s going to make something happen.”

Adams feels that they have a player who embodies the complete package in Reed.

“Watching her in some of her club situations – in tight game situations when it’s coming down to the end and her team needs something to happen, she creates,” said the Griffins head coach. “Whether it’s making a play to find somebody for an easy score or knocking down shots, she’s just a great playmaker. She has a high basketball IQ, so that helps her in that as well.

“The other thing I like about her is she’s a great teammate. She looks out for her teammates first and then finds her spots where she can contribute. Mikah’s definitely a team-first player and she’s going to fit in really well with our current athletes and culture.”

Reed was a member of Team Alberta’s U-16 side at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current, notching eight points against the host Saskatchewan squad in an 80-48 victory in the gold medal match.
